LA SEGARRA, LAND OF CASTLES

In order to give an exemple of all the different kind of castles we can find in la Segarra, we have made a little choice. From the oldest to the ones of the 16th century, few of them are open to the public.

Torre de Vallferosa

Vallferosa Tower: At first sight what attracks the attention is the fact that, being the highest tower in Catalonia, it is not placed in an elevated place with a good sight like L’Aguda mountain range or Sant Donat. But this is a wrong impression as we can quickly observe the tower it is not in the valley but the valley is spread out under it, constituting nearly a narrow pass or gorge ( which gives one of the possible etymological names of the word “Vallferosa”. Its situation, therefore would be strategic to control the passage of the old highroad to Solsona crossing the valley.

For this first impression, an approximation to the study of this tower represents a pile of surprises: from the particularity of being a tower inside another one, to the excellent upkeep of primitive roughcas, which reminds the islamic constructions, and the unusual existence of a latrine or toilet. All this, constitutes an exceptional work untouched until now, thanks to its morphology of castle-tower, which makes difficult to be turned into a noble residence in the modern centuries.

Castell de les Sitges

Castle of les Sitges: The castle of les Sitges is  a little residential fortress with squared plan with the homage tower in the centre. It is basically a low medieval castle, as the building can be considered of the 14th century, despite the several repairs which were made during the modern period, like the opening of new large windows.

Florejacs castle: The present castle of Florejacs is a residential house of the 16th century preserving the medieval elements, like a battlemented tower with rectangular plan, and the battered walls. It is possible to visit the insides of the building on Sundays 11 to 12’30 or all days at established hours for groups. July and August closed.

Castellmeià: It is a castle-palace of the 16th century built making good use of an oval tower of the low medieval period. The portal is made with voussoir, with the heraldic sign of Vergós family ( who orderd the construction). It is necessary to make the large windows stand out, apart from the majestic castle, the large windows of the north and south façade dating the Renaissance.

Castles of Montcortés and Aranyó: Due to its nearness, the castle of Montcortés i L’Aranyó are a characteristic tandem of la Segarra landscape. The castle of Aranyó is built making good use of an old homage tower of an earlier fortress. It belonged to Pedrolo family and it was the natal house of Manuel de Pedrolo, the writer. The castle of Montcortés, built at the end of the 15th century, it is one of the most imposing and elegant of the region. It has two quadrangular twin big towers, a big portal and large windows datin g the Renaissance.

Castle of Les Pallargues: The present castle is a manor house built in the 16th century on an old fortress of teh 13th century, which at the same time occupied the place of a 11th century construction. The main façade is pointed out, with a big Ghotic arcade 13m high and a cylindrical watchtower in the corner. It is open to the public and guided visits are made.
